As a Houston wedding planner, I was so excited to start planning my wedding! One of the hardest decisions was figuring out where we were going to have it. We live in Texas and both of our families were out of state in California and Indiana. We ultimately decided to have it in California because a lot of our guests were already there! We started searching for a venue that was rustic, outdoors, and was naturally gorgeous on its own. When we found Hawk Ranch, they were in the process of updating the venue and I knew the vision they had was going to be absolutely beautiful. This blog is to show you exactly how I planned my own wedding in hopes that you can take inspiration from what I did to make planning your big day easier!
Finding the Perfect Color Pallete
When trying to pick a color palette I initially thought shades of blue would be the way to go because that is the ONLY color my now husband, Jacob, wears. Plus, it would make it very easy for everyone in the wedding to find outfits. But, I was surprised when he vetoed it in lieu of something more colorful! So, we settled on a burnt orange (one of Jacob's favorite colors) and sage green! It was the perfect amount of color that we were hoping for. Take this as your sign to not stray away from adding color in your wedding day!
My Dream Dress
Finding my dress was a process! Being a mid-size gal it made it difficult to envision how it would look when it fit properly. I was on the hunt for an A-line with lots of detail, on the boho side, and with bell sleeves!! I tried on over 30 dresses and finally went to a shop that specializes in curvy bridal dresses. The first one I tried on there was IT! It needed little alteration, a hem, and the addition of detachable bell sleeves. Make sure to stay on the course and I promise you will find your perfect wedding dress - just like I did!
Wedding Prep
Getting ready the week before the wedding was a whirlwind for me! I felt so pampered getting my hair done, nails finalized, lashes, spray tan, and teeth whitened. In that order! I really went all out. But, one thing I regret is trying a new hair product! I tried a new deep conditioner for my hair two weeks before my wedding. I put it on and felt it start to tingle, then it started to BURN!! It fried my hair!! Thankfully I was able to talk to my amazing hair stylist and she recommended some amazing products. Big tip! Don't try any new beauty routines a few weeks before your wedding day!
How to Prep for an Out-of-State Wedding
Because we were planning a wedding from states away making the most out of each visit was crucial. Cake tasting, alterations appointments, DIY's, and everything else that requires in-person collaboration were scheduled back to back. It made for super fun and busy trips. We utilized Google Drive, All Seated, and The Knot's tools to collaborate with everyone involved. While I wouldn't use these typically with my clients, these are great tools for brides who don't have the ability to hire a full-service wedding planner. So, if you are also an out-of-state bride to be, make sure to coordinate all of your appointments in one weekend to make it an easy and smooth process.
Special Touches For Our Wedding Day
Our wedding planning process really brought me so much joy because I loved getting to be in control of all of the details. It also helped me strengthen my relationships with my loved ones. They saw how excited I was to include everyone in my wedding world and how much this wedding meant to me.
It was very important for me to have a wedding that was very personal to me. It really made our entire day something SO special because of this. I highly recommend finding some ways to make your wedding day personal and unique to you and your partner. For us, one that we decided to do was have our cake topper have ducks on it because Jacob loves hunting. Another thing we did was, since we started dating we had always played trivia, so on each plate was a trivia game for our guests to play during dinner. It was also important for us to be the only ones up there during the ceremony, so we had our wedding party sit in a reserved row in the front. Another special thing we did because we don't get to see our guests as much as we like, is we wanted to ensure we could show how much we appreciate them. On each escort card there was a picture of us with our guests, some baby pictures and some from our favorite memories together.
All in all, it was exactly what we wanted, and that's exactly how it should be for you. Special to you, your partner, and your loved ones - however that may be.
